The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan has a wonderful local tradition that is filled with whimsy and is guaranteed to make you smile. A local artist began placing “fairy doors” around town, and the practice caught on with local residents. As you wander around town, you will find fairy doors of various shapes and sizes located on shops and major buildings. The local Starbucks had a fairy door on their counter made from a coffee cup. Even the local Google offices have their very own fairy door. As you search for fairy doors throughout town, you will begin to see various “gifts” left for the fairies at each door. Ranging from candy, to mementos, to money (change), the people of Ann Arbor leave presents for their fairy residents. Often the money will be collected and donated to a local charity.
Urban Fairies is an entire webpage devoted to the Fairy residents and their doors. Here you can get the behind the scenes story on the doors, sightings around town (and around the country), and find stores online where you can get your very own Fairy Doors.
